Munich ’s private breweries and tavern keepers complained that the Hofbräuhaus was ruining their business - it was just too successful. After giving the situation some thought, King Maximilian II. decided to privatise the tavern. However, he forgot one small thing: to ask the people of Munich - and a storm of indignation broke out! A solution acceptable to all was ultimately found. The State of Bavaria became the proud owner of the Hofbräuhaus.
