Reconstruction of the Hofbräuhaus

Max Littmann
Max Littmann

With the rise in tourism in Munich, more and more people were streaming into the Hofbräuhaus. The Chemnitz-born architect Max Littmann was awarded a contract by the royal building authority to refurbish the establishment at Platzl into a modern restaurant facility. On September 2, 1896, the company belonging to Littmann’s father-in-law, Jakob Heilmann, began tearing down the old brewery to build, on the same site, the beer hall that still stands today. The new facility opened a short time later on February 9, 1897. The same day, demolition of the administrative building also began, which eventually became the individual restaurant areas. The new Hofbräuhaus opened on September 22, 1897.
