Hofbräuhaus Song

Wiga Gabriel
Composer Wiga Gabriel

People the world over know the song, “In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus – oans, zwoa, g'suffa!” (In Munich there's a Hofbräuhaus - one, two, down the hatch). This love song, dedicated to the world’s most famous pub, flowed from the pen of none other than a man from Berlin. While sitting in a café in Berlin, the composer, Wiga Gabriel, composed the music to the text written by his friend Klaus Siegfried Richter from Hindelang. Gabriel’s friend Wilhelm Gebauer from Leipzig published the work and made the sheet music available to the Bavarian brass bands that provided entertainment at the Dürkheimer Sausage Market in the Palatinate in 1936. The song was a resounding success. During the following carnival season, the tune became a carnival hit and commenced its triumphant march all the way to the Hofbräuhaus in Munich.
